"Teacher Man", told in McCourt's "put your feet up by the fire and pour yourself a glass of whiskey" brand of storytelling is a fascinating foray into the New York City public school system.
For McCourt, teaching is a job, a daily slog, and a joy. McCourt does not romanticize his 30+ years of teaching high school students, do not expect a Hallmark movie style ending, but it is a satisfying read nonetheless.
